Getting Around Koh Samui: Scooter, Taxi, or Private Driver?

Koh Samui may be a tropical island, but it’s far from tiny. From secluded beaches to jungle waterfalls, bustling markets to mountaintop viewpoints, there’s plenty to explore — if you know how to get around.

Whether you’re here for a few days or a few weeks, choosing the right transport can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your stay. Let’s break down the most popular ways to get around Koh Samui: scooter, taxi, or private driver.

🛵 Scooter Rental: Freedom with a Side of Caution

Scooters are by far the most popular way to get around the island, and for good reason. They’re affordable, convenient, and give you the freedom to explore at your own pace. You can stop off at hidden beaches, local food stalls, and off-the-beaten-path spots that taxis would never take you to.

Pros:

  • Cheapest option (starting from 150–300 THB per day)

  • Total flexibility — go where you want, when you want

  • Easy to park almost anywhere

Cons:

  • Not ideal if you’ve never ridden one before

  • Road conditions can be unpredictable, especially in the rain

  • Accidents are unfortunately common among tourists

Tip: Always wear a helmet, avoid driving at night, and only rent from a reputable shop that includes insurance. If you’re not confident on a bike, it’s better to choose a safer option.

🚖 Taxis & Songthaews: Convenient but Pricey

You’ll find taxis all over Samui, though they can be expensive compared to the rest of Thailand. Most don’t use meters, so you’ll need to negotiate the price in advance. Expect to pay 400–800 THB for even a short ride between beach areas.

Songthaews (shared red pickup trucks) are a cheaper alternative and run semi-regular routes around the island. Just flag one down, hop in the back, and pay when you get off — usually 50–100 THB depending on the distance.

Pros:

  • No need to navigate or park

  • Better for short distances or airport transfers

  • Songthaews are a fun, local experience

Cons:

  • Taxis can be overpriced, especially at night or in tourist zones

  • Songthaews don’t go everywhere and can be unreliable

  • Not ideal for exploring remote areas or making multiple stops

🚗 Private Driver or Tour Guide: Comfort & Local Knowledge

Hiring a private driver is a great option if you want to explore the island in comfort, especially if you're travelling as a couple or family. Drivers often know the best photo spots, local restaurants, and the quietest beaches. Some even double as informal guides.

Expect to pay around 1,500–2,500 THB for a half or full day, depending on distance and duration.

Pros:

  • Stress-free — no navigating or parking

  • Safer and more comfortable than scooters

  • Great for visiting multiple locations in one day

  • Some drivers speak good English and know hidden gems

Cons:

  • More expensive than DIY transport

  • Requires planning and advance booking

Tip: Ask your hotel or a trusted local business to recommend a driver. Better yet — book one of our guided photoshoots, and we’ll take care of the transport and the scenery!

Final Thoughts

So, which is best?

  • For budget-conscious travellers or confident riders, a scooter gives maximum freedom.

  • For shorter trips or convenience, taxis or songthaews are a good pick.

  • For families, couples, or anyone wanting a more relaxed experience, a private driver is absolutely worth it.

Whichever way you choose to explore, make sure to do it safely — and don’t forget your camera. Or better yet…
